Should I negotiate my salary?

Salary negotiation can improve compensation, but the right choice depends on leverage, timing, market evidence and how much uncertainty you can tolerate.

When negotiation makes sense

You may have a stronger case when you have a competing offer, measurable results, new responsibilities, market evidence or skills that are difficult to replace.

Questions to ask first

What is the evidence for your target? What would you accept instead? Could you negotiate benefits, flexibility, title or a review date? What happens if the answer is no?

Keep the decision practical

Do not treat negotiation as a test of confidence. Treat it as a conversation about value, constraints and possible outcomes. Decide what matters most before you start.
